For exterior portraits on medium format RB67, thoughts on best meter. I’ve been looking for a good external and using online apps that definitely weren’t up to the standard I need.
I have to take black and white shots to confirm, but an incident light meter removes that variable, which is golden for expensive slide film. At least my friends from Gelatin Labs sponsored this post by developing it for me :)
Yeah, I just meant in general for people using internal/reflective light meters. I use it with my spot as well.
Interestingly, tied to your article - my Minolta Spotmeter F has buttons to do the zone math for you (spot on shadows and hit “S”) and the math is based on the more strict slide film, with restricted dynamic range. Frustrating for me since I never shoot slide film, but perfect for those who do.
Velvia is stunning! I have had the chance to use both the original and the new versions. In 35mm, 120 and 4x5. And a friend’s father showed me some of his 8x10 Velvia! Great stuff here!
It is so beautiful, and seeing the negatives (I mean positives hahah) in real life is something that hits me differently (I hate to say “hits me differently” now because looks AI-ish, haha). I’m reading “on photography” by Susan Sontag now and there’s a part on her book where she states the difference between photography and painting, and she mentions that painting is powerful because you are looking to something unique that isn’t reproduced. I had the same feeling when looking to the positives. I’m thinking on getting a slide projector 😅
I preferred a spot meter so I could precisely meter highlights then over expose by two stops. A good proxy is sky if it is in the shot. Meter the sky then over expose by two stops.
